A565: The new thousand foot in Bonn will be more expensive than expected

As part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, a comprehensive expansion of the A565 in Bonn is planned. This also includes the Bonn north bridge and the bridge train, known as the "thousand foot", which runs between Bonn Endenich and the Bonn-Nord motorway junction. The cost of this project has increased significantly: While in March 2025 there was talk of an investment of 293 million euros, the current estimates now amount to 450 million euros. Autobahn GmbH mainly justifies this cost increase with the increased construction prices.

The millipede: in need of renovation due to age

Autobahn GmbH reports that the thousand football has reached its mathematical useful life and is no longer sustainable in the long term. This not only represents a technical challenge, but also requires comprehensive planning for the upcoming conversion. The project is currently in the planning phase, with the aim of starting the construction work at the end of 2026. The entire conversion should take a total of six years.

implementation of the construction work and traffic routing

The first construction work focuses on the endproof egg, with an expected completion in late summer 2027. In order to minimize the traffic load in the region during the construction period, a coordinated traffic routing is planned to ensure the flow of traffic on the A565. Autobahn GmbH plans to gradually relieve the existing road sections and to adapt the traffic instructions accordingly.

future infrastructure planning

In parallel to these construction measures, renovation work on the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke, which leads over the A565, is currently underway. A replacement building of the bridge is not tackled before the mid -2030s. In view of the rapidly growing traffic figures, which record around 90,000 vehicles on this motorway section every day, these measures are essential to expand the capacities and to make the infrastructure in a future -proof manner.

load and weight restrictions

In order to minimize the load on the existing bridge trains to the extensive expansion work, weight restrictions on trucks have already been determined. On the millipede, only trucks with a total weight of up to 30 tons are allowed to drive. Against the background of the recurring special tests, these measures are strictly necessary for the previous stability of the buildings.
