The focus: Thomas Kemmerich: Future of the FDP in Thuringia
Thomas Kemmerich (FDP), the state chairman of the FDP Thuringia, emphasized that he is no longer in regular contact with the FDP Federal Chairman Christian Lindner, who advised him to leave the FDP. Kemmerich stated in an interview with the broadcaster Phoenix during the FDP federal party conference that the decision about his political career was related to the offer to his party, either acting as a top candidate or as a state chairman. The party confirmed this decision with an overwhelming majority. Kemmerich emphasizes that the FDP in the Thuringian state parliament acts as a successful opposition party and that it is rated positively by 21 percent of people in Thuringia.
As a vision for the future, Kemmerich sees to see “our political beliefs” in the parliamentary process. He was of the opinion that changing majorities are beneficial in this context and emphasizes that it is not decisive for whom, but what is coordinated. Kemmerich emphasizes that there will be no common applications with the AfD and that there will be no exchange with Björn Höcke. Nevertheless, he was ready to accept voices from the left, the Greens or AfD for FDP positions, although the FDP in Thuringia does not work with these parties.
In the interview with Phoenix, Kemmerich made it clear that he was open to the FDP positions and consider the support of other parties as long as it was in line with the principles of the FDP. Despite the differences in the political orientation, he emphasizes the willingness to fight for the ideas of the FDP and work for them. Kemmerich is the top candidate of the FDP for the upcoming state election in Thuringia and is committed to bringing the FDP's political beliefs into the parliamentary process.
