In April 2025, the Bundeswehr support command in Bonn achieved a decisive milestone with regard to the reorganization of the Bundeswehr. With this development, the area of support, which emerged from the dispute base in Bonn, the central medical service in Koblenz, the planning office in Berlin and further units of the former territorial management command, has achieved its full ability to perform tasks.
The area of support comprises around 55,000 posts and thus represents the second largest organizational area within the Bundeswehr. Under the direction of the support command, this area bundles decisive skills in the areas of logistics, ABC defense and field hunter. This focus is contributed to the resilience and the survival skills of the armed forces and at the same time ensures the fundamental functionality of the entire Bundeswehr.
The support command also plays a special role as a central control instance for health care and the medical service within the Bundeswehr. This aspect was further strengthened in April 2025 by establishing the Bundeswehr Health Care Command. In this way, effective and integrated health care can be guaranteed for all members of the Bundeswehr.
A central feature of the support area is the bundling of limited resources, which enables maximum synergies to generate and thereby increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the armed forces. The independent technical orientation of the specialist commands is crucial to ensure that all skills are developed efficiently and uniformly, which contributes to the interoperability and operational readiness of the forces.
Lieutenant General Gerald Funke is the first commander of the support command. His deputy, general senior doctor Dr. med. Ralf Hoffmann, at the same time leads the central medical service. For the new commander, the orientation of the support area to the state and alliance defense remains of central importance. The year 2029 is also considered an important goal in the threat assessment.
This realignment and strengthening of the area of support shows the determination of the Bundeswehr to continue to develop and always be ready for use. The challenges of modern security policy require a flexible and well -positioned group that can react both nationally and internationally.
