Traffic information: A3 closure in the Heumar triangle ensures congestion fears

The A3 near Cologne will be closed in the area of the triangle Heumar in the direction of Frankfurt next weekend. This blocking is part of an extensive renovation, which is carried out by German unity for Fernstraßenplanungs-baun and -bau GmbH (Deges). The highway will be closed from Friday evening to Monday morning, which can lead to considerable traffic disruptions and traffic jams.

The detour for drivers who want to drive towards Bonn takes place via the A59, while vehicles that are traveling towards Frankfurt are diverted to the A560. The blocking is necessary because new road markings, such as yellow lines, have to be set as part of the renovation of the Heumar motorway triangle.

The HEUMAR motorway triangle is one of the most used motorway hubs in Europe and plays an important role in the region's volume of traffic. Around 220,000 vehicles pass this traffic junction every day, and it is expected that this number will increase to 240,000 per day by 2030. In order to meet the increasing requirements, the triangle, which comes from 1941, is extensively rebuilt. This includes the renewal of all bridges and other measures to make it future -proof. The work should be completed by 2030.

Although the blocking of the A3 in the triangle Heumar is the largest motorway closure in North Rhine-Westphalia this weekend, there are other important blocks in the next few weeks and months that will have a significant impact on traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia. The planned closures include, for example, the A40 near Bochum, which is expected to be blocked for several weeks in summer. It is advisable to find out about upcoming closures and, if necessary, plan alternative routes to avoid delays.
