Bad Honnef: 37 apartments

were created on industrial wasteland

The former industrial building in the Schmelztal of Bad Honnef, which was unused for over two decades, has turned into a modern residential project. This remarkable conversion created 37 barrier -free apartments located in an idyllic environment. The mayor of Bad Honnef, Otto Neuhoff, aptly describes this change as "from the eyesore to the beautiful entree."

The project, which is under the motto "Naturally and inclusive living", is realized by Hohenhonnef GmbH, which belongs to the Cornelius helpers Foundation. The new apartments, which are between 41 and 65 square meters in size, contain nostalgic elements from industrial history, such as high ceilings and brick walls. The rental price starts at 11.50 euros per square meter.

After the construction work began in January 2020, those responsible met with unexpected challenges, including surprises during the demolition work, such as underground tunnels. These difficulties as well as the effects of corona pandemic and increasing construction costs meant that the project now cost 9 million euros instead of the originally estimated 4.5 million euros, of which part was financed by the KfW.

The history of the building goes back to 1892 when it was built as a machine and boiler house and was an important supply facility for the Hohenhonnef lung healing facility at the time. Future residents of the new apartments have the opportunity to use childcare services in order to promote social integration within the residential complex.

Although the project offers many advantages, it also met with resistance from nature conservation organizations that expressed concerns about environmental compatibility. Despite these challenges, the project is now at a new point of development, with the repair of the striking tower, which is not suitable for residential purposes, but should still find future use.

For those interested in the new apartments, the contact information for renting through Hohenhonnef GmbH is available. This transformation of the former industrial building in Bad Honnef not only serves to create living space, but also contributes to the revitalization of the region.
