Hydrogen economy at a glance: IHK roadshow examines the future of energy supply in Münster

hydrogen: Road show of the IHK NRW started in Münster

Münster-As part of the “H2 Road Show” of the IHK North Rhine-Westphalia, the prelude to a significant exchange about the hydrogen economy took place in Münster. Dr. Fritz Jaeckel, general manager of the IHK Nord Westfalen, emphasized that the energy request is still a central challenge for the German economy. Together with more than 50 experts from the industrial and energy industry, the complete value chain of the hydrogen economy was analyzed to determine to what extent hydrogen can contribute to safe energy supply in the future.

In the course of the event, experts like Dr. Eckhard Göske, head of the industrial department of the IHK North Westphalia, emphasized that machine and plant engineering has already taken proactive steps to build a hydrogen economy. Despite the remarkable progress, however, there is still considerable uncertainty regarding the switch to green gases. This can also be seen in the reserved attitude of potential users of these new technologies.

A central aspect of the discussion was flexibility that modern technologies offer. Göske explained that it is now possible to use different types of gas for process heat and to mix hydrogen, for example, with natural gas. These options could make it easier for companies to access hydrogen technology. The suppliers focus on the European market, especially Germany, where the political will to promote hydrogen is strong.

However, the demand for hydrogen -based technology has so far been behind the expectations. Representatives of companies such as Honeywell and Keller HCW report on a low level of demand. At the same time, the critical question was discussed in the event where the required hydrogen for industry should come from. Prof. Dr. Klaus Görner pointed out that politics plans to cover 80 percent of the need from abroad, which could promote the dependency on imports.

The roadshow will continue in Bonn on April 30th and in Hagen on May 21, 2023 to promote further exchange and developments in the hydrogen economy. The results of these events could be crucial to support strategic decisions and help companies integrate hydrogen technologies.
