Burglaries in Baden-Württemberg: Analysis of rising crime

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann warned of hasty conclusions in view of the increasing number of crime. Although the development is worried to him, the Greens politician pointed out that the number of burglaries was previously significantly higher than today. Especially during the pandemic, the number of cases in this area decreased, since burglaries occur less frequently when people are at home. According to Kretschmann, the current increase in burglaries is due solely to Corona-related circumstances, since people are now increasingly out of the house.

In 2022, the number of burglaries rose significantly after years of decline. The police recorded 5204 burglaries, which corresponds to an increase of 15.4 percent, but was still 18.9 percent below the 2019 level. The total number of registered crimes in 2023 in the southwest rose by more than eight percent to 594,657 cases. Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) attributes the increase in crime in the country to economic development and strong immigration.

Kretschmann also pointed out that the growing crime is related to the immigration movement that has increased significantly. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the security sensation of the population is often worse than the objective data on the actual security situation. In order to overcome this discrepancy, a precise fine analysis is necessary to take preventive or repressive against criminal development. According to Kretschmann, Baden-Württemberg will continue to remain the safest country in the republic.
