Two years of war in Sudan: call for help for millions of displaced persons

Two years of war in Sudan: greatest displacement crisis of our time - almost 13 million ...

The war in Sudan, which started two years ago, has developed into one of the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide. According to the UNHCR, around 12.7 million people have now been sold. This number corresponds to almost a third of the country's population. The domestic people are mainly on the run within the Sudan, while many have fled to neighboring countries, especially in the Chad and Egypt. The Situation in these countries is also tense because they are faced with their own economic challenges.

The humanitarian emergency is tightened by inadequate financial resources. In 2024, the UNHCR received only a third of the necessary funds to support the aid measures in the region. This has meant that essential services such as medical help in Egypt had to be severely restricted. The refugee children are particularly affected, many of whom have no access to education in Egypt.

Aktuells around 75 percent of Sudanese refugees live in Chad and Egypt. Humanitarian aid urgently needs to be expanded in order to meet the needs of those affected. The UNHCR cooperates with local organizations and governments in the host countries in order to offer refugee people. In view of the ongoing conflicts and uncertainties in Sudan, international solidarity and support remains of extreme importance.

UN Refugee Aid has supported emergency assistance in the amount of 8.2 million euros since the conflict began in April 2023. Due to the ongoing crisis, the organization calls for mobilizing additional donations. The current auxiliary plan for the Sudan urgently needs additional funds, since only 9 percent of the necessary funds have been received so far.

The main tasks of the UNHCR include the protection and safety of the refugees as well as the provision of vital goods such as accommodation, medical care and hygiene. It is also ensured that vulnerable groups among the refugees, such as women and children, receive special protective measures. The support of the UNHCR is crucial to cope with the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and to open up new perspectives for the refugees.
