Donautech: Commercial area receives green light - what's coming now?

A new chapter for the city: The Donautech industrial estate is about to realize! The local council and the technical committee have already approved the development plan, and the final decision in the local council is scheduled for November 18. The city plans to locate high-quality businesses on an area of around 20 hectares that has so far been used for agriculture, in particular from medical technology, such as the Schwäbische Zeitung reported.

The discussions about the project seem to have finally come to rest. There was only one vote against Daniel Häßler (free voters) in the local council, who complained about the massive area sealing near the Danube. However, the current statute decision was accepted without major objections, which shows that the opinions of the parties are now largely harmonized.

traffic connections and challenges

A central element of the development plan is the traffic development. The new connection of the industrial area to federal road 311 will no longer be guided by a roundabout at the Espen Bridge, but via two staggered intersections with its own signs of turning and traffic light control. This change was decided after a third hearing, which this time went without any significant objections. Nevertheless, there are concerns about the traffic figures, some of which come from the Corona period and are considered not representative of the current situation. Walter Hornung (LBU) expressed doubts about the accuracy of this data and warned of an increase in commuter traffic that could affect the air quality in the region.

The city has already set up a counting point on Eßlinger Straße to monitor the traffic figures and deliver current data. The concerns of the citizens about possible negative effects on air quality and the predicate as a climatic health resort are not unfounded, such as the Schwäbische Zeitung further reported.

bureaucracy and planning duration

The planning of the industrial area has been going on since 2017 and has caused a lot of discussion in the committees and the city administration. Joachim Hilzinger criticized the long duration of the procedure and described it as "ridiculous" that the project has been talked about for seven years. The development plan includes more than 750 pages with extensive documents, including reports on noise development, transport, geology and climate effects. Despite the more than 70 objections to citizens and the statements of over 30 authorities, only a few suggestions were included in the plan.

The city administration now faces the challenge of taking the concerns of the citizens seriously and at the same time not losing sight of the economic opportunities that the new industrial area offers. Preparations for the final vote in the local council are in full swing, and hope for an early start.
