Dispruded Vari-Aff in the Basel zoo caught
On Thursday evening, employees of the zoo in Basel captured a float vari monkey again. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Basel-Stadt cantonal police of the Keystone SDA news agency. The monkey had run out beforehand and had caused excitement. In addition to the animal park workers, the police also participated in the search for the animal.
Vari monkeys are a type of lemur that occurs exclusively on Madagascar. In July 2019, a family of Schwarzweisen Varis was located in the Basel Zoo. Her loud shouting, which is a mixture of grunt, squeak, bark and howling, is characteristic of these animals. The species is threatened with extinction.
The urge of freedom of the vari monkey from the Basel zoo shows similarities with the Red Varis from the Zurich Zoo in 2012: At that time they were able to break out of the Masoala Hall at night and, among other things, explored the souvenir shop.
The Basel authorities initially informed the Warn app Alertswiss about the run-out monkey. However, there was no danger to the population, which is why no special precautions had to be taken.
In comparison, the police in Berlin still searched for a possibly run -down predator, probably a lioness. The Basel police, on the other hand, were able to quickly capture the monkeys again.Source: Keystone
