The explosion occurred when the 57-year-old Coesfeld was still in his car. Fortunately, however, he was able to free himself from the wreck. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was then flown to a special clinic in Bochum by a rescue helicopter.

The pressure wave of the explosion was so violent that parts of the vehicle were thrown through the air. The car is now only a pile of rubble.
