The pilot of one of the most advanced fighter planes in the world had to get out and was catapulted high over the grounded fighter plane on a Marineflugplatz in Texas.
The F-35b Lightning II-Kampfjet finally came to a slow anti-climatic stop in a grass near the runway in Fort Worth.
The Pentagon said the pilot had been out of the question, but the pilot's condition was unknown.
"Security is our priority and we will follow the corresponding examination protocol."
The crash is the youngest in a number of recent incidents with the F-35B, which was first introduced in 2015.
In February one of the jets crashed into the landing on the USS Carl Vinson in the southern China Sea and sank in an incident in the sea where the pilot and six seafarers were injured.
At the beginning of this month, the front chassis of a jet collapsed when it was towed in Japan.
Last summer, the US Air Force also set 300 of the jets due to incorrect emissions and problems with the explosives used to keep pilots away from crashing aircraft.
Great Britain bought 30 F-35B fighter aircraft, which can operate from the two new aircraft of the British Queen Elizabeth class.
