The Tibetan Spiritual Fiiler, the Dalai Lama, apologized on Monday, after a video in which he asked a boy to suck on his tongue, had triggered a counter reaction on social media.
The video that has become viral shows the 87-year-old Dalai Lama, who presses a kiss on the boy while he is preventing his respect.
The Buddhist monk then stretches out his tongue when he asked the child to suck on it. "Can you suck on my tongue", you hear him ask the boy in the video.
The video comes from an event in Mcleod Ganj, a suburb of the North Indian city of Dharamshala, on February 28th.
"His holiness would like to apologize to the boy and his family and his many friends around the world for the pain that his words may have caused," says a explanation that was published on his verified Twitter account.
"His holiness teases the people he encountered, often in innocent and playful way, even in public and in front of cameras," he added. "He regrets the incident."
On February 28, the Dalai Lama spoke in front of a group of 120 recently graduated Indian college students and members of the M3M Foundation, the philanthropical branch of the real estate developer M3M Group, as can be seen from a summary of his comments, which were published on his official website.
'What have I just seen?'
Twitter users criticized the video and called it "disgusting" and "absolutely sick" after it was in trend on Sunday.
"completely shocked to see this representation of the #dalailama. In the past he also had to apologize for his sexist comments.
Another poster, Rakhi Tripathi, said: "What have I seen? What do this child have to feel?"
The Dalai Lama remains the generally recognized face of the movement for Tibetan autonomy.
But the global ramp light, which he enjoyed after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, became weaker, and the flood of invitations to hobnobs with world leaders and Hollywood stars has slowed down, partly because the aging guide has reduced his strenuous travel schedule, but also because of China's growing economic and political influence.
The Chinese government has accused the Dalai Lama of being a "violent separatist", although the Buddhist monk does not support violence and supports a real autonomy of Tibets.
Beijing also criticizes and also routinely exerts pressure on heads of state and celebrities who meet with the Dalai Lama, or even if they send simple messages such as birthday greetings to extinguish its influence.
2019 the Dalai Lama apologized for saying that if his successor was to be a woman, she must be “attractive”.
The worldwide statements come from an interview with the BBC.
