Efficient filter process removes PfAS chemicals made of drinking water to 99 percent

The load of drinking water with so -called "eternal chemicals" is a worldwide problem. Canadian scientists have now developed an innovative method to effectively remove these substances from the drinking water. These chemicals, also known as PFAs, are often referred to as "eternal chemicals" due to their extremely slow degradation rate and thereby accumulate in the environment.

PFAs are used in many everyday products such as pans, outdoor jackets and disposable cups because they have practical properties such as water dismissal and heat resistance. However, if you include the human organism, you can lead to serious health problems, including liver damage, thyroid diseases, obesity, fertility disorders and cancer. The European Union therefore plans to completely ban PFAs.

Pfas chemicals were repeatedly detected in the groundwater. According to a study by the US geology Agency, about half of the tap water in the USA could be burdened with PFAs.

The Canadian researchers have now developed a two -stage method to filter PFAs from the groundwater. In the first step, you use a special material, similar to conventional water filters, to capture the harmful fabrics. This material is able to intercept different PFAS compounds, including the newer connections. As a result, up to 99 percent of PFAS particles could be filtered out of the water.

In the second step, an electrochemical process is used to completely break the PFAS connections into your individual elements. This prevents the chemicals from getting back into the environment and groundwater through the waste.

At the moment, the Canadian researchers are still in the test phase and check the effectiveness of their method in the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia. If the implementation is successful, the method should also be used in other places. This new method for removing Pfas from the drinking water could make an important contribution to improving water quality and protecting the health of the population.
