ECB starts survey for the design of new euro banknotes by 2024

The European Central Bank (ECB) plans to decide on the design of the new euro banknotes by 2024. She would also like to take into account the opinion of private individuals. By the end of August, Europeans can express their views on topics for the next series of banknotes on the ECB website. The ECB would like to ensure that people in Europe can identify with the design of the euro banknotes. This emphasized ECB President Christine Lagarde and explained that the uniform currency and the common European identity were closely linked.

To ensure that opinions from all euro countries are represented on an equal footing, the ECB carries out a survey by an independent opinion research institute on its website. On behalf of the central bank, this will ask the same questions of a representative group of people from the euro area.

The redesign of the euro banknotes was initiated by the ECB in December 2021. The central banks regularly develop new banknotes to make counterfeiting difficult and reduce the environmental impact of the banknotes. The new notes should have a longer lifespan and are even more inclusive to address all people in Europe.

The decision on the topic of the new banknote generation is expected to make the ECB in 2024. A design competition then takes place, in which the opinion of the citizens is again obtained. The final decision on the design and time of the production and edition of the new banknotes is expected to be made in 2026. It will take another two to three years for the new notes to get into circulation.

The current euro banknotes show comparatively sober motifs of buildings that are actually not available. The first generation of Euro banknotes was issued on January 1, 2002, while the second generation was completed in May 2019 with new security features.

The various topics for the future euro banknotes were also published. This includes European culture, European values in the mirror of nature, rivers as water of life in Europe, the importance of hands when building Europe, the potential of Europeans for the future of Europe, the community and identity of people in Europe as well as the unrestricted mobility of birds that stand for our common existence.

The new euro banknotes will not only be more secure, but also to be shaped by the people in Europe.
