Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau agree to stop asylum seekers at unofficial transitions

The USA and Canada have reached an agreement that aims to prevent asylum seekers from entering the common land border across unofficial transitions.

President Joe Biden landed on Thursday before talks with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in which immigration is likely to play a major role, in Ottawa.

The revised agreement on safe third countries (STCA) will be discussed on Friday at the meeting between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trudeau, and the two parties will iron out details before an official announcement will be made later on the day, a source of the Canadian government said.

Mr. Trudeau was under pressure, the transit of asylum seekers in Quebec, the mainly French -speaking province, in which he held his parliamentary seat.

Mr. Biden arrived on Thursday to his long -late visit to Canada to express the unit in Ukraine, and will speak to Mr. Trudeau on Friday.

border crossings between the two countries are regulated by STCA, which allows US and Canadian officials to reject asylum seekers in both directions at formal entry harbors, but does not apply to unofficial transitions such as the Roxham Road in Quebec.

The Roxham Road, an unpaved path that has become a preferred route for asylum seekers, made international headlines in 2017, shortly after the former President Donald Trump began to act hard against illegal migrants, which led to an enormous influx of asylum seekers.

The USA and Canada share the longest land border in North America, and the new agreement would expand the pact so that it applies to the entire border and asylum seekers who are taken up via unofficial transitions rejected.

As part of the agreement, Ottawa has agreed to move a number of refugees that have not yet been announced, but the source warned that these details would still have to be agreed.

The United States has been urging the agreement to extend the agreement for some time. In the past few months there has been a strong increase in asylum seekers who enter Canada via unofficial border crossings.

The US Ministry of Homeland did not respond to inquiries about comments.

The office of Mr. Trudeau did not answer a request for comment on the agreement on the border crossing.

In a conversation with reporters on Wednesday, Mr. Trudeau said that the governments of the USA and Canadas had worked for many months to solve the "complex" problem of irregular border crossings, and he hoped to be able to make an announcement soon.
