Statutory health insurance expects a billion -off deficit for 2024

The statutory health insurance (GKV) expects a deficit in billions in 2024. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, however, excludes cuts in performance and announces a new increase in the contribution rate.

"Finance Minister Christian Lindner made it clear that the tax grants to statutory health insurance cannot be increased," Lauterbach told the Editorial Network Germany. GKV is expecting a deficit between 3.5 billion and seven billion euros for next year.

Without measures to counteract the average additional contribution, the average additional contribution would increase by 0.2 to 0.4 percentage points. The additional contribution is currently an average of 1.6 percent, the general contribution rate is 14.6 percent. For Lauterbach, an increase in the contribution ceiling is not an option, as this would increase the compulsory insurance limit at the same time and this was excluded in the coalition agreement.

The GKV must therefore prepare for increasing contribution rates if it wants to receive further financial support. Lauterbach, however, emphasizes that he will not make any cuts. It will show what the situation looks like and what measures are taken.
