King Charles III. Will not be shown on Australia's new 5 dollar banknote, which will instead have an indigenous design, the central bank of the country shared on Thursday with
The Malven-colored 5 dollar note was Australia's only remaining banknote on which a picture of the monarch was shown.
The Australian reserve bank said that the step would honor "the culture and history of the first Australians".
The bank said the decision was followed by a consultation with the Labor Party's center-left government, which supported the change. Opponents say the step is politically motivated.
opposition leader Peter Dutton later hit the government and called the change "another attack on our systems, our society and our institutions".
he compared the step with the debate about the change in the date of the Australian national holiday, which was criticized by some because he celebrated the country's colonial past.
"I know that the silent majority do not agree with a lot of aroused nonsense, but we have to hear more about these people online," he told 2GB radio.
Mr. Dutton said that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was of central importance for the king's decision not to appear on the note, and asked him to "commit himself".
After taking office last year, Mr. Albanese began to lay the foundation for an Australian republic by creating a new position of the deputy minister for the republic, but the maintenance of a referendum on the separation of constitutional relationships with Great Britain was not a priority for his government.
It is still expected that the king appears on coins that currently bear the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Australia has a tradition in adding indigenous works of art to its currency. The 1 dollar banknote issued in 1966 contained images of rock paintings from Aborigines, and the first polymer banknote, a $ 10-grade from 1988, contained art of Aborigines. The modern 50 dollar note shows the celebrated author, activist and musician David Unapo and the 5 dollar note already shows a painting in the point style by Michael Nelson Jagamara.
The queen was first shown on the 5 dollar note in 1995 when the currency was updated in honor of its 40th anniversary of throne.
