Philippines shock New Zealand: First World Cup victory

Philippines surprisingly win against New Zealand at the women's World Cup

25.07.2023, Wellington-the Philippines caused a big surprise at the Women's World Cup. In the second group game of Group A, on Tuesday (25.07.2023) they defeated the Co-host New Zealand 1-0 (1-0) in Wellington.

The newcomers Philippines celebrated their first victory and their first goal at a World Cup. The "football of Ferns", on the other hand, have to worry about moving into the round of 16 after this setback. After their opening victory against Norway, they would have been almost certain with another threesome to the round of 16. Now you have to prepare for a hot group finals on Sunday (July 30th, 2023).

The decisive goal scored Sarina Bolden in the 24th minute with a header. With this goal, she not only provided the Philippines' historical World Cup goal, but also for the first victory in her World Cup history. New Zealand had Pech and only hit the post in the 34th minute. A later goal from Jacqui Hand was revoked after a video evidence decision due to offside position.

The game was also overshadowed by previous turbulence. After the killing run before the opening game against Norway, a few days before the duel against the Philippines there was a fire in the New Zealand team hotel, which led to an evacuation. The New Zealanders initially showed themselves unimpressed and immediately took control of the game.

Before the game,

Filipino coach fox Alen Stajcic had already emphasized that the defensive was the key to success. His team cleverly defended and left little space for the hosts. After a good 15 minutes, the Philippines also ventured more on the offensive and were promptly rewarded.

Despite all the efforts, New Zealand failed to achieve the equalization. Even after the change of new players in the second round, the Philippines did not burn anything. New Zealand pressed, but remained too inaccurate in the end. In the end, goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel recorded the victory for the Philippines.

Due to the surprising result, the constellation in Group A is now exciting before the last matchday. New Zealand will meet Switzerland on Sunday (07/30/23), while the Philippines play against Norway at the same time. Both games can be followed live on sportschau.de.
