Title: German water jumpers without a medal at the swimming World Cup in Fukuoka
Date: 17.07.2023
The German water jumpers had no chance of a medal at the swimming World Cup in Fukuoka. Neither Lena Hentschel with Jana Lisa Rother in the synchronized final of the 3-M board, nor Timo Barthel with Jaden Eikermann in the synchronized final of the 10 m tower were able to place on the podium.
The Tower European master Barthel from Halle (Saale) and his partner Eikermann took ninth place in the synchronized final from the 10 m tower with 364.80 points. Already on Saturday they ended up tenth with Lars Rüdiger from the 3 m board. However, the big dream of a medal remained unfulfilled because almost 70 points were missing too bronze. The duo Lian Junjie and Yang Hao from China won gold in the seventh competition in the Prefectural Pool.
Also Lena Hentschel, who won bronze in Tina Punzel in 2021 in Tokyo in 2021, missed the podium with her partner Jana Lisa Rother. They took ninth place with 272.67 points. The title went to China again, represented by Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen.
The German Swimming Association (DSV) had to make do without a medal after seven out of 13 decisions in water jumping. The first medalless World Cup has been threatened since 2015. After the resignation of record European champion Patrick Hausding and the six -time European champion Tina Punzel, the German water jumpers are facing a change. However, the new national coach Christoph Bohm assures that the head is not put in the sand.
The German water jumping scene has been shaken by serious allegations to deal with sexual abuse in the past few months. The long -standing success coach Lutz Buschkow was released without notice due to these allegations. Jan Hempel, a former athlete, had made these allegations public and emphasized a "culture of looking away" in the DSV. The labor court will deal with the case at the end of the year.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the DSV tries to look optimistically at the future and is planning a fresh start in water jumping.
