A small tennis fairy tale could take place at this year's Wimbledon Championships. Ukrainian Elina Svitolina hurries from victory to victory and is only two successes away from winning the title. With her impressive triumphal march she has now also played into the semi -finals.

On Tuesday, Svitolina met the Polish world ranking first IGA Swiatek. After a hard-fought match, the 28-year-old Ukrainian was able to prevail 7: 5, 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 2 and thus qualify for the semi-finals for the second time after 2019. Although she only competes in the main field thanks to a wildcard, Svitolina showed her strength again and withstanded the pressure. After 2 hours and 50 minutes she finally converted her second match ball and was duly celebrated by the spectators.

In the semi -finals on Thursday, Svitolina will meet the Czech Marketa VonDrousova. In her quarter-finals, the 24-year-old Vondrousova surprisingly defeated the American Jessica Pegula 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4 and thus reached the semi-finals in Wimbledon for the first time in her tennis career. VonDrousova, who was the finalist at the French Open in 2019, showed her skills again and transformed her second match ball after 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Svitolina had shown some nerves at the beginning of the match against Swiatek and was a break in the first set. But she increased in the course of the game, played more aggressively and put Swiatek under pressure with her power tennis. The Polish, who had previously won the French Open, became nervous and made some slight mistakes. Svitolina took advantage of this weak phase and won the first sentence.

In the second sentence, Swiadek initially managed to achieve a break. But Svitolina fought and managed to fight back and create the equalization. In the tiebreak, however, Swiadek kept the upper hand and secured the set win. At that time the momentum seemed to be on her side. But in the third set, the Polish suddenly lost control of her game. Many slight mistakes crept in, which Svitolina used to create the turn again and ultimately decide the match.

It will be exciting to see how Svitolina will beat VonDrousova in the semi -finals. With her victory against Pegula, the Czech showed that she is also in top shape and cannot be underestimated. Wimbledon fans can look forward to an exciting duel in which two surprising semi-finalists meet.
