The 82-year-old Christa Block died after a short, incurable illness with her family. Eugen Block announced the sad news in a letter to all 2400 employees of the company. According to information from the Bild newspaper, Christa Block succumbed to cancer.
In the emotional letter, Eugen Block finds touching words about his late wife. He describes her as a loyal companion who encouraged him and encouraged him to independence. Christa Block also campaigned for every employee and supported them in times of crisis.
Eugen and Christa Block married in 1970. Christa, the only daughter of deaf parents, had completed an apprenticeship as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk after graduation.
The managing director of Eugen Block Holding, Stephan von Bülow, praised the deceased as an important personality in the foundation and success of the company. Christa Block had a significant contribution to leading the Block Group to today's success, according to Bülow.
Together, Eugen and Christa Block had built up the steak house empire. In 1968 they opened the first "Block House" in the Winterhude district of Hamburg. Eugen Block had previously worked as a waiter in different cities and inspired the idea of a German steak house chain.
Today there are a total of 54 "Block House" restaurants, including 43 in Germany. Eugen Block also opened the "Elysée" hotel in Hamburg-Rotherbaum in 1985, which is now known as "Grand Elysée" and offers 511 rooms.
The deceased was Eugen Blocks closer and played a significant part in building the company. She had actively participated in the establishment of the employee representative and the funding fund. In addition, the Elysée kindergarten and the art gallery in the Elysée were very important to her.
On the occasion of her 70th birthday, Eugen Block once said at the "Hamburger Abendblatt" about Christa: "If I came home too late on 10,000 evenings, then you, dear Christa, never stood there and just said, but only said: 'Nice that you are there.'
The funeral of Christa Block will take place in the closest family. In his letter to the employees, Eugen Block asked for understanding that he and his family need calm and privacy in this difficult time.
