What is the COP27 summit?
The summit takes place from November 6th to 18th in the holiday resort of Sharm el-Heikh, Egypt.
cop stands for Conference of the Parties to the Un’s Climate Change Framework-and includes all UN member states as well as the state of Palestine and the Holy Stuhl, the UN-NOT Member States Niue and the Cook Islands as well as the European Union, which is negotiating as a block. The event takes place annually (except in 2020, when it was interrupted by Covid-19), and this is her 27th year.
The host of the summit is selected by the UN and cycles through the different regions. Last year Britain was hosting the cop summit in Glasgow and officially handed over the presidency to Egypt at the beginning of the two weeks.
What is the goal of the COP27 summit?
The actual work of the summit is to negotiate the details of international climate agreements, in particular the Paris Agreement, which obliges the countries to try to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C via pre -industrial temperatures.
The main battle of the summit will be the financing, especially for the developing countries that bear the main burden of the effects of climate change such as droughts and floods. This financing has been a controversial and unsolved topic for many years and was heading in Glasgow.
The countries also expect that they are introduced to new obligations to reduce their emissions, which are known as their nationally stipulated contributions. So far, only 29 countries have set new goals, which means that there is "no credible path" to keep the warming at 1.5 ° C.
