Baerbock as a UN President? Germany relies on multilateral!
New York, USA - The federal government plans to nominate Annalena Baerbock as the new president of the UN General Assembly for the session period 2025/26. This was announced on March 19, 2025. The official election is expected in New York for early June 2025 and is considered a matter of form. Baerbock, who is currently Foreign Minister, will compete in September 2025 and at the same time lay down her Bundestag mandate in order to fully concentrate on her new task. In her position, she will take on the second most important role in the United Nations after António Guterres remains UN Secretary-General until the end of 2026. Baerbock will be the first president of the General Assembly to take over immediately after her office as Foreign Minister.
As President, Baerbock represents all 193 UN member states. Her tasks include the organization and management of the meetings of the General Assembly, in which it has to demonstrate diplomatic skill. Although the decisions of the assembly are not binding under international law, they are increasingly gaining political importance and serving as the mood barometer of the world public. Germany ambitious to improve its chances of a non-and-independent seat in the UN Security Council from 2027 by this election and to set an example of multilateral world order. The Federal Government received the occupation law for this meeting period from the regional group "Western European and others", as Tagesschau
background and context of the nomination
The choice of Baerbock follows the efforts of German diplomat Helga Schmid, which was originally nominated for this position. Baerbock will replace the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, Philémon Yang. The last German occupation of this office took place during the Cold War. Baerbock will be the fifth woman in this role since World War II. In the past few weeks, however, a resistance to their candidacy has also been loud. Russia rejected Baerbock's nomination and in his criticism made a comparison to Nazi ancestors, which underlines the political tensions about their choice.
Baerbock plans to present their work program in New York in May 2025 to outline the strategic goals of their presidency. She has also announced that for personal reasons, she has not taken on a leadership role in the future Greens parliamentary group, which indicates that she wants to concentrate fully on her new role in the United Nations.
In view of the challenges associated with the role, public opinion about Baerbock's calling is mixed. While some see their choice as a progressive step for Germany and the international community, others fear that the political situation and the prevailing opinions in the UN could limit the influence of their presidency. The coming months will be decisive to observe how Baerbock acts in this key role and what impulses it can set.
