Bavarian science alliance: new impulses for security and peace!

Erlangen, Deutschland - On April 14, 2025, the Bavarian science alliance for peace, conflict and security research was founded in which ten scientists from the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) are involved. Prof. Dr. Marco Bünte, an expert in politics and society in Asia, is also one of the members of this new institution. Your goal is to examine the complex dynamics of peace, conflicts and security. The Initiative comes at a time when the global order is subject to change and non-military security risks such as poverty, climate change, authoritarian regimes, religious fundamentalism and migration still shape the security agenda.

A decisive influence on this topic is the war in Ukraine, which also has an immediate effect for Germany. Cyber attacks and the spread of fake news represent serious challenges that need to be mastered. Allianz also devotes itself to the hybrid warfare and the resilience structure of western societies, which is of increasing importance in the current global context.

research and interdisciplinarity

Research within Allianz takes place in four multidisciplinary clusters: war and peace, international law and human rights, culture and democracy as well as business, technology and climate. The aim is to generate new research impulses for joint projects and joint events. The FAU researchers bring in a strong profile in the human rights area, which is essential for international security research.

Another central element of Allianz are planned transfers to politics, including Policy Briefs and events in the state parliament in order to put research into practice. As part of a kick -off event of the security conference, the role of artificial intelligence in terms of war and peace was also discussed. Prof. Dr. Katrin Kinzelbach presented a project that deals with geo-data and human rights violations.

hybrid warfare in the focus

The importance of hybrid warfare in the modern conflict landscape is still emphasized in the current political discussion. The interpreting of hybrid wars is a challenge, which is characterized by the use of non-conventional methods, including cyber attacks and propaganda manipulation. The Bundeswehr observes these developments intensively and offers current information about the current map of the hybrid warfare, which provides an overview of relevant actors and their strategies.

This interdisciplinary collaboration is of great importance for understanding international security policy. Bavarian science alliance could help to ensure that Germany and other western nations can react better to the changing conditions of the global security situation. The focus is on developing innovative approaches in order to strengthen the resilience of our societies towards such complex threats.
