Bundeswehr maneuvers in Amberg-Sulzbach: Residents have to be careful!

The Bundeswehr has announced some notable exercises in the Amberg-Sulzbach district for the coming days. A penetration exercise and an extensive 36-hour combat exercise will take place from September 15th to 19th. The penetration exercise will be carried out in the community of Schnaittenbach (Kemnath am Buchberg), while the combat exercise will take place on September 16th and 17th in the Freudenberg/Ebermannsdorf area. Residents are asked to stay away from the facilities of the troops taking part in the exercise. Particular attention is drawn to the potential dangers of leftover explosives and found ammunition. If citizens discover such items, they should immediately notify the nearest police station in order to avoid possible risks, as oberpfalzecho.de reports.

But the Bundeswehr's activities are not the only military exercises in the region. US Army troops and NATO forces are currently active around the Grafenwöhr military training area. Among other things, the US Army is currently practicing with 25 soldiers, 5 vehicles and helicopters until July 31st. In the affected communities such as Hartenstein and Hersbruck, citizens can expect German and American military vehicles on the streets, because the noise level during the exercises is quite remarkable, as nn.de emphasizes.

Planned maneuvers and exercises

  • Durchschlageübung: 15. – 19. September in Schnaittenbach
  • 36-Stunden-Gefechtsübung: 16. – 17. September im Raum Freudenberg/Ebermannsdorf
  • US-Armee Übung: bis 31. Juli in Hartenstein und weiteren Gemeinden

An exemption for shooting periods was granted in July and August, allowing the US military to practice more intensively with large-caliber weapons during this time. The NATO maneuvers “Saber Junction 25” are also on the program for the months of August and September, which last from August 21st to September 21st. Over 3,700 soldiers from various countries will take part, including British and Dutch forces. This will result in increased convoy traffic and helicopter deployments, which surrounding road users should also take into account, as traffic disruptions are to be expected on important roads such as the B299 and the A6.

It is advisable for residents to keep themselves informed about the current maneuvers in order to avoid inconvenience and stay safe while traveling. It remains to be hoped that the exercises go smoothly and everyone involved is well prepared. Finally, they should also pay attention to the instructions from the local authorities in order to move safely in the immediate vicinity of the exercises.
