FC Augsburg took the lead in the first half in the 41st minute through a goal from Phillip Tietz. Union looked hardly dangerous at the time and was initially unstable. The game took a turn when coach Steffen Baumgart Andrej Ilic changed in the 61st minute. After a capital mistake by the Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen, Ilic achieved equalization in the 69th minute.

The decisive comeback

Andrej Ilic, who revived the offensive after his substitution, ensured the surprising winning goal in the 90th+4 minute in added time. Ilic reached the cross from Rani Khedira at the right moment and the striker scored 2-1 for Union. The victory was described as flattering, since Union had no significant chances up to the 68th minute, while Augsburg had previously shown more offensive.

The game was not only important for the teams, but also for referee Dr. Felix Brych, who led his last game in the Bundesliga and was ceremoniously adopted. The victory was particularly gratifying for Union after being lost 0: 3 in the home league against Heidenheim. Trainer Baumgart had changed the starting line -up in five positions at the end of the season, which contributed to stabilizing the defensive in the second half.

The season in retrospect

Union Berlin showed an improvement in the second half of the season and celebrated some successes that ultimately led to a safe relegation. With eight undefeated games in March and April, the team developed the necessary self -confidence. Augsburg had already secured the relegation in April and was able to go into the game with less pressure. Berliner Zeitung notes that the encounter for Union is a conciliatory season end and was an important experience for many players, including the debutant David Preu.

In the overall comparison, Union ended the season in 13th place, while Augsburg will also stay in the league. Further information on the previous season and the match day are on Kicker available.
