Bambergs Buer Brücke: Modernization brings new traffic quality!

This measure is part of an extensive new building that aims to replace the existing building that was built in 1951. The old bridge had significant structural defects and recently could only be driven on one lane. The blocking has far -reaching effects on traffic and residents, since the bridge is one of the most important connections between the Bug district and the south and east of Bamberg.

As part of the new building, not only the bridge itself, but also Hans-Schmitt-Straße and the street connection to the gallows is renewed. This should significantly improve traffic safety and the capacity of the traffic routes. According to city spokesman Michael Memmel, the construction work has been completed by the end of 2024. The traffic release of the new bridge is planned for spring 2025, depending on the weather conditions.

progress and challenges

The road construction measures that include the asphalting work originally had a tight schedule, but the demolition of the old bridge is now expected for April 2025. The reasons for this are changed underground conditions that lead to a delay of a few weeks. In addition, the asphalting work is planned for March 2025, with pedestrians and cyclists being able to use the new bridge over the side of the river during this time.

The condition of the Franz Fischer Bridge was already rated as bad in 2001. Various renovation and new construction variants were presented in 2011, with the city council ultimately decided on a new building next to the existing bridge. Due to financial restrictions, however, the construction could not be promoted. It was not until autumn 2022 that a new schedule was set up, which provides for the construction of the new bridge structure in the period from May 2023 to summer 2025.

The bridge infrastructure in Germany

The German Transport infrastructure comprises around 39,500 bridges, with many of these bridges being built in the 1960s and 1980s. The increasing heavy traffic and the age structure of the bridges require extensive maintenance and modernization measures. Germany pursues the goal of adapting existing bridges to the increased requirements regarding load capacity and traffic safety.

For the Franz Fischer Bridge, the modernization is exemplary for the efforts of the country to renew the infrastructure. The cost of modernizing the bridge stock in Germany is estimated at a total of 9.3 billion euros, with a clear focus on highly stressed routes and the necessary adjustments. It is expected that a continuous network of federal highways will be produced by 2030 with the necessary load -bearing capacity of the bridge structures.

The Franz Fischer Bridge is therefore not only a local construction project, but part of a greater development that aims at the renewal and improvement of the bridge infrastructure in Germany. The bridge plays a crucial role in the traffic of the region and the associated maintenance of mobility in Bamberg.
