Bavaria gets 49 new train stations: Future of the train ride begins!

Bamberg, Deutschland - The Bavarian railway company (BEG) is planning a comprehensive expansion of rail transport in Bavaria. The aim of this initiative is to increase the attractiveness of the train journey and to improve the punctuality of the network. In recent years, the punctuality of the trains in German long -distance transport, especially in 2024, has been greatly reduced. In order to counteract this, the BEG has identified 49 possible new train stations. Among these are Bamberg Süd, Ebersberg Süd and Regensburg Walhallastraße. Many of these new train stations are to be created, especially in Upper Bavaria and Swabians.

Five new stations could be built in Munich, while three more stations are planned in Regensburg and in Memmingen. However, precise planning is required to enable smooth integration of the new stations into the existing timetable. In addition to the opening of new stations, BEG also relies on a comprehensive renewal of the infrastructure, which affects the entire rail landscape in Bavaria. Nationwide, the DB plans general renovations on heavily contaminated routes to increase the capacity of the rail network and achieve traffic policy goals.

general renovations from 2026

Deutsche Bahn (DB) begins in July 2024 with the general renovation of 40 heavily used railway lines, such as the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim, which is completely renovated for five months. During this time, passenger traffic is replaced by buses while freight transport is being redirected. From 2026, seven more railway lines will also be planned in Bavaria. Klaus-Dieter Josel, DB group representative for Bavaria, emphasizes the high burden on the rail network and the need to renew the infrastructure. This large investment step includes the renovation of tracks, soft, signals and train stations.

The first renovated route in Bavaria will lead from Nuremberg to Regensburg in the first half of 2026, followed by further measures in Obertraubling - Passau, Munich - Rosenheim and more. The general renovations, which also include improvements such as modern platform roofs, accessibility and path conduct systems, are intended to help keep operating quality at a stable level and to reduce bottlenecks in the existing rail network.

future prospects and challenges

With the “Strong Schiene” strategy, the Federal Government wants to sustainably improve rail traffic in Germany. This requires a targeted expansion of capacities, which also requires large construction work, which are often planned for more than ten years before they are implemented. Although these construction activities sometimes lead to tense capacity situations, the DB does everything possible not only to stabilize the quality of operations, but also to improve.

Regarding the previous experiences, it is expected that positive effects of these plans will become visible in Easter 2023, a period that is usually shaped by loss of quality. Even if appropriate measures are considered in detail in the planning, monitoring the effects on rail and freight transport remains a central task of the DB. The implementation is coordinated by a committed traffic concept, which should minimize the impairments during the construction phases.

The new plans for the train stations and the comprehensive renovation work are therefore in line with the aim of modernizing and making rail traffic in Bavaria. Mit diesen Entwicklungen wird nicht nur die Pünktlichkeit verbessert, sondern auch die gesamte Nutzererfahrung auf dem deutschen Eisenbahnnetz positiv beeinflusst.
