Young people in Bamberg: shoplifting alarm! Four offenses in one day!

On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, several shoplifts were carried out in Bamberg, in which a total of four young people were caught. The first incident occurred in a supermarket on Pödeldorfer Straße, where an 18-year-old hid three liver buns and a toothpaste in her jacket pocket. She tried to leave the business without paying, but was provided by employees.

Almost an hour later there was another theft in the same supermarket. Two 14-year-olds stole a bottle of Vodka worth 10 euros. They too were discovered, the vodka remained in the shop, and the young people were then brought to their parents.

further incidents

A third incident took place in a drugstore on the Maximiliansplatz. Here a 16-year-old took a collective figure worth around 3.50 euros from the packaging and also hid her in her jacket pocket. She too was observed and handed over to the police.

This accumulation of thefts gives occasion for concern, especially at a time when, according to a study by the commercial research institute EHI, the number of shoplifting in Germany has increased significantly in Germany. The loss of retail due to theft was around 3.7 billion euros, an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year. This raises questions about developments in retail and the possibilities of preventing thefts.

The background

Retail faces special challenges that are caused by price increases. Experts, as EHI expert Frank Horst, warn that higher prices could make theft more attractive. Some dealers also fear that their own employees could also be involved in thefts, which was already observed in 2022.

The police crime statistics indicate that the number of charging theft displayed in 2022 has risen by 34.3 percent to almost 345,000 cases, which is 5.8 percent above the pre-corona level. A significant part of the thefts are eliminated, and professional thieves gangs are also troubled by trade. These stealed were typically worth 1,000 to 2,000 euros or more, often alcoholic beverages, high -quality branded clothing, electrical articles and cosmetics.

Overall, the number of shop theft has risen sharply in recent years. The complexity and the well -organization of the gangs are an increasing problem for retailers, which makes the seizure of suitable measures for the theft prevention inevitable.
