New city archive in Bayreuth: Completion is imminent!

A lot is happening in Bayreuth right now! Construction work on the new city archive, which is being built on the site of the former Leers’ villa in the St. Georgen district, is progressing quickly. As the city reports, the facade of the new building facing Inselstrasse was recently completed. The new architecture combines functionality and modern design, which will make the city archive an attractive place for storing valuable historical documents. In addition to storage rooms on the upper and lower floors, a spacious, glazed foyer with a reading room and seminar room on the ground floor will be completed as quickly as possible.

The renovation of the historic villa, which offers a usable area of 415 square meters, is also coming to an end. Offices for the archive employees and additional work rooms will be set up there. The barrier-free connection between the new building and the villa is ensured by a glazed connecting building, which makes access easier for everyone. The move of the previous city archives from the former community hospital at Maximilianstrasse 64 has already begun, and the packing of around 7,000 archive boxes is in full swing Bayreuther Tagblatt reported.

Another important chapter for the city

The new location will not only provide space for the countless documents, but will also be state-of-the-art. Rolling shelving systems for over eleven kilometers of archive material have already been installed, and plan cabinets for photos and films with more than 35 linear meters are also ready for use. The entire construction, with an investment volume of around 21.5 million euros, is supported by funding from the Oberfrankenstiftung, urban development funding and the cultural fund. Despite increased construction costs of 1.25 million euros, this investment has proven to be necessary in order to meet the high requirements of a modern city archive. A further look at the project development shows that the laying of the foundation stone took place on October 13, 2023, followed by a topping out ceremony on May 3, 2024.

Public access to the existing archive will be closed until October 13, 2025, but good news for everyone interested: the reading room can continue to be used until this date. The archivists are then available to answer written inquiries, although users must expect longer processing times. The official inauguration of the new city archive is planned for early 2026 and is eagerly awaited.
