Moorbad Park in Dachau: A green oasis full of rare plants!

The moor pool park in Dachau is a popular retreat in the city and offers its visitors a green oasis. Located directly on Münchner Strasse, behind the city library and the student dormitory on Max-Mannheimer-Platz, the park attracts both locals and tourists. In the past, this site was known for its spas, which was closed more than 70 years ago. Today the park is a place of relaxation that comes up with many exotic plant species, including the trumpet tree (Catalpa Speciosa), which was planted by EuroArt for the 30th anniversary.

EuroArt is an association of European artists, which also includes Dachau. After closing the spas, the site experienced a long phase as a place of training for Deutsche Post before the city of Dachau acquired the area in 2009 to convert it into a recreational park. Today, ten different species of magnolia and many early bloomers, such as ornamental cherries, grow in the moor pool park. Another highlight is the fennel wooden tree, the yellow -green flowers of which will soon appear. The leaves of this tree were used by American indigenous people for tea cooking, although today is advised against consumption.

variety in the park and challenges for the city green

Stefan Tischer, head of the city green department for city green and the environment, takes care of the care of the public green spaces in Dachau. He emphasizes the challenge of creating a space that meets both the requirements of nature and the needs of people. When choosing the plants, it attaches particular importance to the fact that they do not bear fruit that could attract wasps. The moor pool park is an exception in which numerous exotic species are harmoniously integrated. Children appreciate the possibility of climbing, especially on the shrub "seven sons of heaven", which blooms until October and also offers food for insects.

Tischer expressed the desire for a “Pocket Park” in the city center of Dachau, but there are currently no concrete plans for such an initiative. It is possible that artistic projects and events in the park will further strengthen the connection to EuroArt and keep the cultural heritage of the region alive.

artist communities and artistic heir

The meaning of Dachau as an artist colony has deep roots that go back by the early 20th century. At that time, many artists were looking for inspiration in nature and left their urban studios to settle down in the picturesque environment. The moor landscape and the mountain backdrop attracted important artists such as Gabriele Münter, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and August Macke, who contributed to the creation of the "Blue Rider".

Today, the EuroArt association contributes to the care and further development of the artistic heritage in Europe and promotes the exchange between the 96 members from 46 European artists. Since 2003, Dachau has been part of this lively community, which continues to keep up the values and traditions of art, while the Murnau art scene with art walks and exhibitions emphasizes the wealth of the cultural heritage. Further information about EuroArt and the artist colonies are available on the official website EuroArt.eu
