Men in shock: breast cancer study reveals higher mortality!

Erlangen, Deutschland - A current study from Erlangen has revealed interesting knowledge of breast cancer in men. In Germany, around 700 men develop this disease annually, which is around 1 % of all breast cancer cases, but mortality is significantly higher compared to women. According to the examination, 80.4 % of women live five years after the diagnosis, but only 69.6 % of men. The results are based on data from cancer registers that include patients covered between around 2,500 men and 307,600 women between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2018. This analysis was carried out by Infranken

In 2020, a total of 70,550 women and 740 men in Germany have a new breast cancer. The general probability of developing breast cancer in the course of life is 13.2 % for women, while it is only 0.1 % for men. But the study shows that men are often in an advanced tumor stage and generally have a worse forecast. Even if factors such as age and treatment are taken into account, the risk of death in men remains higher. Lifestyle, biological and genetic factors may be responsible for this.

causes and risk factors

The causes of breast cancer in men are versatile. Breast cancer arises from the rudimentary breast tissue, which is similar to that of women until puberty. About 90 % of the diseases of men have their origin in the milk gear cells. The disease is particularly often estrogen -dependent. Men also have estrogen, but in smaller quantities. An increased estrogen level can be caused by overweight, liver diseases or taking hormones. The risk factors include older age, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise and local radiation exposure.

  • frequent symptoms are:
  • knot in the chest
  • changes in the nipple
  • liquid secretion

The diagnosis is usually carried out by ultrasound, mammography and biopsy. In most cases, this includes the removal of the affected tissue, possibly followed by radiation or chemotherapy.

research and self -help

Research on breast cancer in men has so far been a small priority compared to female diagnosis and therapy. There are no specific early detection programs, which often leads to later diagnoses. Nevertheless, more self -help groups and information offers have been established for affected men in recent years. Studies such as "N times" aim to improve the supply of male breast cancer patients. According to the Krebsgesellschaft Life 77 % of the sick men five years after diagnosis, which is slightly lower compared to 87 % of women.
