Fire brigade operations at Sendlinger Tor: subway disorders until 9 a.m.!

On February 4, 2025, there were considerable disorders in subway traffic in Munich, in particular through a fire service deployment at the Sendlinger Tor. The subway lines U1, U2 and U7 were affected. The MVG announced that the U1 runs only to a limited extent between Mangfallplatz and Kolumbusplatz as well as between the main train station and the Olympic shopping center. Stops such as Fraunhoferstrasse and Sendlinger Tor are completely eliminated. Similar to the U2, which only runs between Messestadt Ost and Columbusplatz and between the main train station and Feldmoching Bahnhof, while the U7 only runs between Stiglmaierplatz and Olympic shopping center. The Sendlinger Tor and Central Station stops are not served. These restrictions were expected to be expected until 8:40 a.m., but at 8:01 a.m. it was reported that there could continue to be disabilities by around 9:00 a.m. In addition to the subway lines,

Bus lines 52 and 62 are also affected, which were only able to run to a limited extent due to the fire brigade. Line 52 currently only runs between Gärtnerplatztheater and Zoo, while line 62 between Rotkreuzplatz and Stephasplatz as well as between Gärtnerplatztheater and Ostbahnhof is operated. Important stops such as Sendlinger Tor, St.-Jakobs-Platz, Marienplatz (cattle market), Viktualienmarkt and Blumenstraße remain unanswered. These disabilities are also announced until around 8:50 a.m.

subway timetable and other disorders

The current problems in subway traffic are not the first disorders that the Munich Transport Society (MVG) has to cope with. A few days ago, long waiting times were recorded on the U3/U6 and U4/U5 underground lines due to vehicle failures. This was the second day in a row with clocks in the subway timetable. The MVG apologized for the train failures and explained that a lack of available vehicles was the cause. Oliver Glaser, Head of Operation Schiene at the MVG, referred to special shifts that tried to increase the number of trains on the rails, but this was not yet sufficient to improve the situation.

Some of the challenges include the installation of a new underfloor spray in the subway workshop, which affects daily maintenance, as well as delivery delays on new C2 trains. There is also a tense personnel situation: around 27 positions in daily maintenance are currently vacant. The MVG has announced that it will intensify recruiting for specialist staff and to complete the necessary work in the workshop as soon as possible.

outlook and other measures

From February 3 to February 14th, there will be temporary cuts in the U4 and U7 underground lines. While the U4 will drive every ten minutes all day, the reinforcement is eliminated during the main traffic. The U7 itself will take short trains on a shortened line path, while passengers can switch to the lines U2 and U5. Until the adaptation on February 3, failures on the main lines U3/U6 and U4/U5 are still to be expected. The MVG is working on stabilizing the situation in subway traffic, further improvements are conceivable from mid-February, since the vehicle requirement is expected to reduce during the modernization work.

It is a challenging time for the Munich citizens, since the daily way to work and appointments are made more difficult by the current disorders. The MVG is still responsible for maintaining public mobility and improving the situation.
