Fire station in Attenkirchen: purchase contract collapsed – what now?

There was a lot going on in the small community of Attenkirchen on December 2nd, 2025. A good 60 interested citizens gathered in the citizens' hall to take part in the citizens' meeting. Mayor Mathias Kern presented a comprehensive report on the current situation in the community. How Mercury reports, the families in Attenkirchen can be happy: all needy children find a place in the crèche and kindergarten, and there are even some places left. This is the result of a significant increase in staff to improve care. The municipality's expenditure clearly flows into the area of child care, which currently enjoys top priority.

But not everything is going well in the community. The planned construction of a retirement home failed for economic reasons. In this context, the care shared apartments and a planned family doctor's practice in the Bachfeld development area were also considered unsustainable. The community is at least thinking about possible developments in the “Weihersdorfer Feld” development area.

Fire station in queue

A worrying setback concerns the planned new fire station. The original purchase agreement from 2019 has been deemed void under current law, meaning the property in question does not legally belong to the municipality. This news surprised not only the mayor, but also those present at the citizens' meeting. “There is no sole fault,” clarifies Mathias Kern, and emphasizes that discussions with the owner are already underway.
This could significantly delay the project, whose costs have now risen to 4.6 million euros.

In the background there is a plan to remove the legacy of the old fire station on Schulstrasse, which, despite the overcrowded rooms, is no longer up to date. The local council had originally considered the new building in the commercial area on Bachfeld, but the corona pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the generally rising construction prices made the plan expensive. The project was well thought out: the construction costs were somewhat contained through savings, such as fewer social areas and reduced toilets on the first floor, and the leasing of a photovoltaic system. However, financing remains uncertain and possible borrowing may be necessary.

Water faces major challenges

Another exciting topic at the citizens' meeting was the water dispute. Once an agreement has been reached, the risk of the water being turned off is averted. Nevertheless, independence in water supply is a goal of the community, especially through the possible construction of a well between Obermarchenbach and Unterappersdorf. The first results from the planned test drilling are expected as early as next month, in February.

The challenges show that the community of Attenkirchen is faced with a variety of issues that need to be actively addressed. How South Germans emphasizes, the municipal administration plans to carry out much of the upcoming work on its own - an approach that is intended to promote cohesion and personal responsibility among citizens.

The citizens' assembly, a place where exchange between residents, administration and political representatives is promoted, therefore plays an important role in addressing these issues together. The term “citizens’ assembly” is used in various contexts in Germany and is not legally binding, but plays a crucial role in local democracy.
