Nature lover for 75 years: Werner Sedlmeir is celebrating at 93!
When a 93-year-old looks back on 75 years of membership in a club, it shows consistency and passion. Werner Sedlmeir from Wartenberg in the Erding district recently celebrated this impressive anniversary with Naturfreunde Freising. He was duly honored at a festive annual meeting and gave his club a historical membership card, which was issued in 1951 with the card number 182. What a time!
Born and raised in Freising-Neustift, Sedlmeir joined Naturfreunde at the age of 15, originally motivated by his love of nature and the mountains. “It was just my passion,” he says. But the roads for cycling were different back then, as he remembers. With his friends they used to often cycle on the motorway or explore the Danube in a boat. These friendships and experiences shaped his youth, and many of them continue to this day.
A life for nature
The Naturfreunde Freising are part of Germany's national Nature Friends and are committed to peace, environmental protection and gentle tourism. Active participation is encouraged here and a wide range of leisure activities is offered for all age groups. The associated Nature Friends House not only offers space for group stays, but also for overnight stays and smaller events. It is open for business most weekends and is a popular destination for cyclists and hikers.
Sedlmeir married early and became a father - his active participation in the club decreased over time, mainly due to work and family. Nevertheless, he always remained connected to the Friends of Nature as a supporting member. After the death of his wife five years ago, he finally found his way back into active club life. Today he attends game nights and senior meetings, stays mentally fit and recently gave chess lessons to a board member, winning two out of three games. This lively participation shows that, despite his age, he is still a “young at heart” spirit.
A legacy for the future
The Naturfreunde Freising is not just an association, but also a community that connects history and tradition. Let's take a look back: The Nature Friends' first joint hike took place on April 14, 1895 in Vienna. The association has grown since then and has championed many important causes, from environmental protection to social projects.
Looking to the future, Nature Friends are already looking forward to the next big anniversary: in autumn 2026, a member of the century will be congratulated. Sedlmeir's life story is part of this impressive collection of stories that have shaped and will continue to shape the club.
The Naturfreunde Freising is not only a place for active recreation and community, but also a living piece of history that is always evolving and adapting.
