Aerial bomb discovered in Hof: train station closed and residents evacuated!

Today, June 22, 2025, an aerial bomb was discovered in Hof, Upper Franconia, during construction work at the main and freight station. The Upper Franconian police immediately informed the public about the discovery and announced that a security radius of 300 meters had been set up around the site. This area includes several blocks of flats on Hans-Böckler-Straße as well as parts of the Bahnhofsviertel, near a Kaufland market. The safety measures are necessary to minimize the risk to local residents and to reinvigorate the discussion about the dangers of World War II munitions in our area. According to Merkur, an explosives expert is supposed to assess the situation on site in detail.

The police, supported by emergency services from the THW, the federal police and the rescue service, have already initiated several measures. The affected apartment blocks were evacuated and a care center was set up in the gymnasium of the Sophienschule. The city of Hof recommends that evacuated residents temporarily stay with friends or relatives. Such measures are standard procedure in cases like this, as Bayreuther Tagblatt states, as the potential danger of uncontrolled detonation must be taken seriously.

Restrictions on train traffic

Travelers are also feeling the effects of the bomb discovery. The train station in Hof is currently completely closed, meaning no train traffic is possible. Trains from Nuremberg (RE 30/31) temporarily terminate in Bayreuth, while trains from Schwandorf (RE 2) stop in Marktredwitz. The RE35 line from Bamberg also only stops as far as Oberkotzau. Deutsche Bahn plans to set up replacement services to support affected travelers.

Evacuation and security

The discovery of ordnance is not uncommon in Germany, where numerous World War II bombs are still in the ground. As ERGO describes, the situation requires quick action to protect residents. There are important things to consider when evacuating: Documents, medication and other essential items should be taken with you. In addition, pets should be accommodated in alternative accommodation as they are often not allowed in the evacuated areas.

The police will monitor the evacuation. Help and information on lifting security measures is provided through various channels, including social media and warning apps such as NINA or KATWARN. “It is essential to follow the authorities’ instructions,” said a police spokesman. “The safety of the population is the top priority.” While the authorities are now doing everything they can to resolve the situation safely, the people of Hof are called upon to show patience and support each other in this tense situation.
