Rotenburger start the pentathlon championships with a new team!

Leverkusen, Deutschland - On March 7, 2025, TuS Rotenburg and the shooting choir of the district town are preparing intensively for their first event in the classic pentathlon. These championships are an important step for the local sports scene and are intended to give an insight into the sport that has existed since the 1920s. The disciplines of the classic pentathlon include air rifle shooting, shot puts, running, swimming and swimming fencing and offering the participants the opportunity to demonstrate their versatility. It is important to mention that the classic pentathlon is not Olympic, in contrast to the modern pentathlon, which is part of the Olympic Games.

Various utensils are required for the upcoming competitions, including bathing caps, spikes, iron balls, air rifles and swords. The organization of these championships has been in the hands of the German Fechter Association (DFB) since the 2023/2024 season, which also pursues the goal of qualifying participants for the open North German championships on May 7th in Salzhausen and the German Championships on June 28th.

training and challenges

Since October 2024, Anette Meyer has launched a training offer that not only promotes diversity in sports, but also serves as a platform for generalists. Around 20 participants between the ages of 11 and 60 are currently regularly participating in the training units. The different disciplines are particularly challenging, as shooting other skills are required than fencing, while swimming can be a major hurdle for inexperienced athletes, while running is considered easier.

The regular training sessions for shooting, fencing and swimming started in February 2025, while further units for running and shot puts are planned in the coming weeks. Interested parties can contact Anette Meyer directly to learn more about the training offer.

German championships in the fencing fencing

The German Championships in Degenfecht took place in Leverkusen in parallel to the preparations in Rotenburg. This event showed strong services from 143 individual competition participants and 31 teams from 57 clubs, with participants from the age groups represented from 1923 to 2007. The individual and team competitions were held for two days and brought exciting results. fals reported by the individual competitive Löhr and Maya Bienefeld competed for the fencing center of Solingen. After strong fights, Löhr reached 11th place, while Bienefeld took 40th place. Jakob Stange was able to reach 20th place in the men.

The women's team from Fechtzentrum Solingen took 7th place, while the men's team achieved the 8th place. The championships not only illustrated the high competitiveness of the participants, but also the important role of the fencing in German sport.

The classic pentathlon has its roots in the modern pentathlon, which was launched by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. This sport combines bourgeois "cavalier sports" such as fencing, riding and shooting with popular sports such as swimming and running, which offers remarkable diversity in the training methods and competitions. The development of modern pentathlon since its premiere in 1912 at the Olympic Games has contributed to the fact that the disciplines are constantly updated and adapted to the needs of the athletes.

With these developments, both in the classic pentathlon and in the fencing fencing there is great hope of a successful year for everyone involved. The upcoming competitions will not only show the talents of the athletes, but also the commitment of the trainers and organizations that are behind these initiatives.
