Memmingen Airport is booming: Secret behind 3.5 million passengers!

The history of Memmingen Airport is an exciting example of regional success on a private basis. As Focus reports, the airport has developed into a cost-effective alternative for travelers between the major metropolises of Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich. The number of passengers is rising steeply: in 2023 there were around 3.2 million passengers, and for 2024 there are expected to be over 3.5 million. This growth is not a coincidence, but the result of clever location selection and market-oriented strategies.

Memmingen, home to the airport of the same name, has around 42,000 inhabitants and has established itself as a center for business, education and administration in the Danube-Iller region. The city has an interesting history dating back to the Roman Empire when it was known as a military camp. Over the centuries, Memmingen developed into an important trading location on the salt route to Lindau and was granted the status of an imperial city in 1286. This historical foundation provides the airport with a stable base from which it could develop. Wikipedia also found that Memmingen's location, estimated by more than 11 million people in the area, plays a significant role in the airport's success.

A look at development

Scheduled operations at Memmingen Airport started in 2007 and have developed significantly since then. Today it is the third largest airport in Bavaria, only behind Munich and Nuremberg. What's particularly impressive is that there are no seasonal holes; Passenger numbers remain stable even in winter, which is due, among other things, to the many ski tourists. Ryanair has several aircraft permanently stationed that fly all year round. The focus on cost-efficient processes with short distances and lean processes makes the location particularly attractive.

The airport is currently being further expanded: the apron is being enlarged, additional parking positions are being added, and the terminal areas and security lines are being expanded. The goal is to increase the number of passengers to five million in order to grow closer to Nuremberg and Hanover. The location factors in the region are strong and the demand for air travel is unbroken - there is really something to be said for that.

Cultural integration and municipal structures

The city of Memmingen not only offers a thriving airport, but also a rich cultural life. It has numerous historical buildings and museums in which the history and cultural heritage are impressively presented. The well-preserved old town, the Town Museum and the MEWO art gallery show that Memmingen is more than just a transport hub; it is also a place of meeting and exchange.

The city's political landscape is traditionally shaped by the CSU, and thanks to a solid financial policy basis, with a debt burden of just 512 euros per capita, it is managed responsibly. This stability not only promotes local life, but also strengthens the city's economic strength.

All in all, it shows that Memmingen Airport and the city itself form a harmonious unit that is well positioned for the future. The close connections to the surrounding economic regions and the continuous growth strategy promise further positive developments.
