Berti Boo: The mysterious Halloween adventure of a lonely ghost!

On October 31st it's that time again: Halloween is just around the corner! Traditionally, this day marks a festival that has its roots in ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly Samhain, which was celebrated on November 1st. Whether trick-or-treating, costume parties or dressing up as ghostly creatures - the variety of celebrations is almost endless!

This year we have a very special story from Bavaria that captures the magic of Halloween in a very unique way. As innpuls.me tells us, the ghost Berti Boo has been haunting an old farm between the Inn and Chiemsee for over 250 years. Surrounded by hay bales, tools and a loyal barn cat, he no longer enjoys being a ghost and longs for company.

Berti's adventures on Halloween

Halloween is a special night for Berti and his friend, Misty Franzl. This evening they are allowed to go out among people without attracting attention. Berti remembers his own childhood, which was without electricity or sweets, and wonders what people's lives are actually like. On their Halloween tour he meets a mysterious figure who gives him a piece of candy. However, this candy only has magical powers for 24 hours!

The next morning, Berti wakes up as a human and experiences the warmth of the sun on his skin for the first time. The spirit discovers the joys of being human: it helps in the village, makes people happy and enjoys life. But the happiness is short-lived - he soon becomes transparent again as the effect of the candy wears off. The mysterious woman of Halloween explains to him that he needs someone who will truly know him with his heart.

This is where a boy named Anderl comes into play. When he recognizes Berti, a wonderful friendship develops that allows Berti to come fully alive. Now he lives with Anderl and his family, helps on the farm and makes everyone smile in the evenings with his accordion.

The fascination of Halloween

But what makes Halloween so special? In addition to the ghostly costumes and the tradition of trick-or-treating, which grew out of the ancient custom of “souling,” the festival remains a symbol of remembrance and commemoration. Halloween accounts for a quarter of annual candy sales in the United States, and the celebration has reached enormous proportions.
