Violent argument escalates in Passau: fight ends in the Inn!

An exciting evening in Passau ended on Saturday in a heated argument that became far more serious than originally thought. At around 10 p.m., a dispute broke out on Innstrasse between two men, a 22-year-old Syrian and a 25-year-old Turkish man, which quickly developed from a verbal argument into a physical fight. According to pnp.de, the Syrian opponent hit the Turk in the face with his fist, whereupon the situation escalated further.

The fight was further fueled by an unknown perpetrator who hit the 25-year-old on the head with a music box. In the midst of the commotion, a 28-year-old from Kosovo sprayed animal repellent spray into the Turk's face, which made the situation no less tense. However, the two main opponents were not impressed by this. They continued to wrestle even after falling into the nearby Inn. The Syrian finally let go of the Turk and ran away while he was left behind on the bank. A witness later found the Turk helpless on the banks of the Inn, as nachrichten.at reported.

Investigation and other incidents

The police have initiated an investigation into grievous bodily harm against those involved. Passau currently seems to be a place where tempers sometimes run high. Eyewitnesses reported another incident in a discotheque, where a 22-year-old Afghan man physically attacked three young women between the ages of 19 and 21. The women then had to seek medical treatment after they were attacked, some of them violently.

The incidents in Passau shed light on the challenges facing security forces. A research project at the Goethe University Frankfurt, which deals with police use of force and their criminal investigation, could provide new insights in this regard. The KviAPol project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), delivered valuable results from 2018 to 2023, which were summarized in specialist publications, among other things. The findings from this extensive study could help to better understand how such conflicts can be avoided in the future. Those interested can find more information on the project homepage kviapol.uni-frankfurt.de.

The evening in Passau reminds us that sometimes all it takes is a spark to turn a harmless argument into a dangerous situation. We can only hope that such incidents will soon become a thing of the past.
