Fight for hostages: Israel threatens Hamas - hell will await you!
Gazastreifen, Palästina - on February 13, 2025, the location in the Gaza Strip will continue to be shaped by intensive conflicts and a brittle ceasefire. This situation has followed the dramatic events since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which over 250 hostages were taken. According to reports, the Israeli government called for Hamas not to leave any other hostages until Saturday, otherwise there are military consequences.
The Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz said that the upcoming Gaza War would be more intense than the previous one and not end until the Hamas is completely defeated. It remains unclear whether Hamas is able to released all hostages or only three by Saturday. Meanwhile, Hamas representatives have talks with international intermediaries in Cairo.
ceasefire and hostage agreement
The recent agreement between Israel and Hamas over a ceasefire and the release of hostages ensures mixed feelings in Israel. On the one hand, there is joy over the possible return of the hostages, on the other hand, there is a profound concern for the security of the persons still being captured. The agreement provides for a first phase of six weeks, starting on January 19, 2025 at 10:15 a.m., and includes comprehensive measures to return to rest.
During this first phase there should be a complete ceasefire, the Israeli forces withdraw from densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip, and the return of the Palestinians to their residential areas will be made possible. In addition, the release of 33 hostages - mainly women, older and injured - and the release of around 1,900 Palestinian prisoners are planned. If civilian hostages are released in the course of the agreement, there is a clear regulation on the part of Israel: 30 Palestinian prisoners are released per civilian hostage, for each soldier 50.
reactions from Israel and the Gaza Strip
The announcement of the ceasefire led to spontaneous cheering celebrations in the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of Palestinians gathered in different cities to celebrate their hope of a peaceful future. At the same time, people in Israel, such as Ornit Barak, expressed the desire for the end of the war and the return of all hostages, which shows that the situation on site arouses many emotions.
In the past few weeks, however, there have also been reports on persistent fights. Hamas has postponed the release of the next hostage group indefinitely and made statements that Israel did not adhere to the previous ceasefire. According to the Israeli authority of Cogat, a total of 15,000 trucks with humanitarian aid have come to the Gaza Strip during the ceasefire. Nevertheless, the Hamas reports of 92 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire, which only increases the tensions.
international dimensions and perspectives
President Joe Biden and other international actors emphasize the importance of the agreement to enable humanitarian aid and the return of hostages. Biden has underlined the importance for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and provides for a period of three to five years. In addition, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will expect talks in Israel and other countries in the coming days to address the release of hostages and stability in the region.
The continued negotiations that concern complex questions of humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of the Israeli troops are therefore at the center of current developments. The pressure remains high, while the international community is waiting for how this fragile situation will continue to develop.
