On Thursday evening there was a tragic swimming accident at the popular quarry lake in Schweinfurt, which put the lives of two young girls in danger. At around 8:15 p.m., the rescue service and fire department were alerted after first responders discovered a child with water wings and another girl floating in the water. The first aiders managed to quickly bring the 8-year-old to shore and initiate first aid measures. But the situation quickly became serious as the girl's mother desperately searched for her second daughter.
An attentive helper then went into the water and found the 6-year-old sister. While both girls were treated on site by the rescue service and an emergency doctor, the 8-year-old had to be declared dead in hospital on Friday afternoon. Her 6-year-old sister's life is still in danger, and the police in Schweinfurt have started an investigation into the background to the accident. Witnesses who observed something are asked to call (09721) 2020.

The quarry lake extends over 60 hectares and reaches a depth of up to 3.50 meters in some places. Despite its popularity, swimming here is at your own risk. An indication of this are the signs on the banks indicating that there is no water rescue supervision. This is not the first time that a tragic incident has occurred in this place: back in August 2024, a 26-year-old man drowned in this body of water.
