River Rats are clearly defeated by Schweinfurt: 2:7 defeat in Geretsried!
An exciting but unfortunately disappointing game for the Geretsrieder River Rats: On Friday evening they lost 7-2 to league leaders ERV Schweinfurt. Despite a committed start, the Geretsried team were unable to score the goals they needed and were faced with a merciless opponent. This reports Mercury.
The game started promisingly, but the first goal was scored after just eight minutes by Ilya Zheltakov for Schweinfurt. Geretsried had more possession in the first half of the game, but the top players were missing, which took its toll in the second half. With goals from Tomas Cermak and Pavel Bares, the deficit quickly fell to 0:3. The River Rats' defense was unable to stabilize and allowed further goals, so that the deficit increased to 0:5 by the 32nd minute.
A bright spot in the backlog
With Ondrej Horvath's first goal in the 37th minute, the Geretsried team regained some hope, but Schweinfurt didn't let themselves be disturbed. In the final section, Petr Pohl showed his class again and increased the score to 6:1. Florian Strobl, who returned to the team after an injury, scored the second goal for Geretsrieder, but the deficit was already too big.
After the defeat, coach Hans Tauber spoke about the lack of conversion of opportunities: “We simply need too many opportunities to score goals and also concede too many easy goals.” This means that the team continues to have difficulty getting promoted in the table.
Ice hockey in Germany
Ice hockey has always been a popular sport in Germany. Over Statista you learn that 4.9 million Germans have a great interest in ice hockey. In 2024, the number of members in the German Ice Hockey Association was already around 25,900. A similar picture emerges with spectators: the average number of spectators last season rose to almost 7,800 per game, a significant increase from the previous 5,900.
The Eisbären Berlin celebrated their eleventh championship title in 2025 and, together with EV Füssen, which holds 16 titles, are an important part of ice hockey history in Germany. There is a lot at stake for the Geretsrieder River Rats, not only in their own league, but also in the context of the national and international ice hockey scene.
At a time when the sport of ice hockey is experiencing an upswing both nationally and internationally, the River Rats must sharpen their focus to be successful in the upcoming game against their neighbors. It remains to be seen whether they have the necessary "touch" to learn from this setback and achieve a new season in the next match.
