GREENS demand: Tirschenreuth district maintains indoor swimming pool!
There are currently heated discussions in Erbendorf about the future of the municipal indoor swimming pool. The Steinwald local branch of BÜNDNIS 90/THE GREENS has put forward a proposal that for some seems like a breath of fresh air in the city's tense financial situation. “We demand that the indoor swimming pool be handed over to the Tirschenreuth district,” announced Josef Schmidt, spokesman for the GREENS in the district council and candidate for district administrator. The aim is to develop sustainable savings strategies that give the city financial flexibility.
A central point in the proposal is to relieve the burden on the city's budget. Schmidt emphasizes that taking over the indoor swimming pool could not only reduce the municipality's personnel costs, but would also continue to secure the swimming pool's operations. The topic was already discussed on October 7, 2025 in the district council's parliamentary group speaker meeting. Co-speaker Fabian Keppler-Stobrawe sees this as an opportunity for the city that is urgently needed.
Financial challenges and social responsibility
The situation is serious: the city has a debt in the mid double-digit million range, which makes it questionable whether subsidizing the town hall continues to make sense. “We need a sustainable financing concept,” emphasizes Keppler-Stobrawe, who also appeals to the city’s social responsibility. Families and those in need of care in particular should not be left behind while expenses for larger projects increase at the same time.
The GREENS are also calling for a reconsideration of the Erbendorf town hall. Here, ongoing operating costs and lease payments exceed income, which further strains the city's resources. "Funds released from the indoor pool transfer could flow into the urgently needed renovations of the outdoor pool. This is important for many families and young people in the area," says Keppler-Stobrawe. In recent years, investments in the outdoor swimming pool have repeatedly had to be foregone due to a lack of financial resources.
The indoor swimming pool as a leisure place
What many people may not know: the indoor swimming pool in Tirschenreuth has a lot to offer. It is equipped with a 25 meter lap pool and has a range of other amenities such as relaxation islands, a whirlpool, a steam room and even a separate baby paddling pool with a water temperature of 30°C. The opening times are quite family friendly, it is open Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., although it is closed from mid-May to mid-September. These factors make the indoor swimming pool a popular meeting place for young and old, which shows how important facilities like this are to the community writes Schwimmbadcheck.de.
The coming weeks will show how the city reacts to the GREENS' proposal. Will it be possible to find a solution that ensures a functioning infrastructure and takes the financial pressure off Erbendorf? It remains exciting!
