A chef with Filipino roots wants to become Oktoberfest Madl 2025!
Preparations for Oktoberfest 2025 are already in full swing! The tz is currently looking for the Wiesn-Madl 2025 and the application deadline ends soon, on July 13th. Among the candidates is Cherrie Mae, a 22-year-old chef from Lautrach in Unterallgäu, who has found her home in Bavaria with Filipino roots. Unlike many, she comes to the Oktoberfest not only with a dirndl, but with a passion for Bavarian traditions. As she says herself, a new dirndl would be a dream for her. With her performance, Cherrie Mae would like to demonstrate the connection between different cultures and her enthusiasm for the lifestyle in Bavaria. Her favorite activities are traveling, eating, drinking and generally enjoying life - in keeping with the Oktoberfest motto!
What appeals to people? Every year, the Oktoberfest in Munich attracts between six and seven million visitors who come to enjoy Bavarian cosiness. The festival has been held annually since 1819, with few interruptions, for example during the world wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally begun as a celebration of the wedding of Prince Regent Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, the ceremony has developed into an integral part of Bavarian culture over more than two hundred years. The festival site, known as Theresienwiese or “the Oktoberfest”, is now equipped with numerous beer tents, attractions and an extensive gastronomic offering. Not to forget: The most popular dishes range from crispy chicken to roast pork and pretzels.
Tradition and innovation at the Oktoberfest
The character of the Oktoberfest has changed over the years. For example, the first stall offering grilled chicken opened in 1881, while large tents with balconies and live bands accelerated the celebrations' permanent locations. And it wasn't until 1950 that the tradition of the official beer tapping began, with the mayor of Munich tapping the first barrel and thus opening the Oktoberfest. If you want to visit the Oktoberfest this year, you should hurry up with your reservations, as the most popular campsites are often booked out quickly!
In recent years, events for special groups have also been added, such as the LGBTQ+ celebrations at the traditional costume parade. And while September temperatures are often summery, many attractions remain highly appreciated. Another highlight is the Oide Wiesn, an area of the festival that stands out from the modern aspects and offers many historical attractions.
A place of encounter and enjoyment
Whether in Lederhosen or Dirndl – Bavarian costume is very important, even if it is not compulsory. The Oktoberfest is a place to meet, celebrate and enjoy. If you can't be there, you can watch a live stream of the festivities on the official website. The anticipation for Oktoberfest 2025 is growing and we are excited to see who will get the coveted cover photo as Oktoberfest Girl. Cherrie Mae has the potential to leave her mark on Oktoberfest history – not just as a chef, but also as a cultural ambassador.
