New cycle path between Könghausen and Immelstetten: safety for everyone!
On June 15, 2025, a new cycle path between Könghausen and Immelstetten was officially opened to traffic. This part of the cycle path network closes a significant gap between the districts of Unterallgäu and Augsburg, as Merkur reports. The construction of the cycle path took around nine months and also included the construction of a new traffic island that serves as a crossing aid for cyclists and pedestrians.
Particularly noteworthy is the cross-district dimension of the project, which crosses the borders of the two districts twice. In the future, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use an approximately 1,650 kilometer long route that is separated from busy roads such as MN 23 and A 10, as the press release from the Unterallgäu district office underlines.
Cooperation creates security
The safety of road users was a central concern of the project from the start. District Administrator Alex Eder and District Administrator Martin Sailer praised the excellent cooperation between the two civil engineering authorities. Mayor Susanne Nieberle of Eppishausen expressed her satisfaction with the improved connection to the national cycle path network. The construction project, which was carried out by the municipalities of Eppishausen and Mitteleufnach, cost a total of around 1.5 million euros, of which 80% of the eligible costs are covered by the Swabian government.
In order to realize the entire project, the planning by the engineering firm WipflerPlan and the construction by LS Bau AG from Thannhausen were crucial. Eppishausen not only built the cycle path with special construction capacity, but also built an additional 100 meter long sidewalk and took over the entire financing and processing of the subsidy. The new cycle path runs for 885 meters along the MN 23 district road and for 765 meters along the A 10, which creates additional safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Sustainability and government support
The opening of the cycle path between Könghausen and Immelstetten is a further step towards a sustainable transport policy. This is in line with the federal government's goals, which focus on cycling as a contribution to climate protection. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport has provided financial resources to support the construction and maintenance of cycle paths. Programs such as the “Cycling Model Project”, “Cycling Network Germany” and the “City and Country Special Program” until 2029 show how seriously the federal government takes the promotion of cycling.
With the commissioning of this route, Cologne is once again proving to be a pioneer in the development of a continuous cycle path network that facilitates the connection between cities and communities and at the same time protects the environment. The cooperation between the districts involved promises a positive development for the future of cycling in the region.
