European Radon Day: Together against the invisible danger!

Today, November 7, 2025, is European Radon Day, a significant event under the motto “Together for Radon Protection”. The aim of this campaign is to comprehensively inform the population about the risks of radon and to emphasize the importance of radon protection. Like that Wiesentbote reports, the Bavarian Radon Specialist Office, together with other specialist agencies in German-speaking countries, will actively provide information about these dangers.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas that escapes from the ground and can penetrate buildings. It becomes particularly dangerous when people spend long periods of time in rooms with elevated radon concentrations, as this can increase the risk of lung cancer. According to that CDC Radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer related to environmental factors, second only to cigarette consumption.

The facts about radon

Did you know that radon can be present in any building, regardless of its age or whether it has a basement? It penetrates through small cracks and holes, so it is important to measure radon levels. The legally established reference value for radon is 300 Bq/m³ as an annual average. Exceeding this value in homes should give rise to action, while in workplaces even legal action is required.

The first steps to protect against radon are clear: inform, measure and act. It is particularly important to individually measure the radon concentration on site. If you are unsure, you can contact experts such as construction experts or engineers who can provide advice on new buildings and renovations.

Radon protection measures and prevention

What exactly can you do about radon? Here are some tips:

  • Risse in Böden und Wänden abdichten.
  • Erdgeschossböden mit hochdichtem Plastik abdecken.
  • Radon durch Lüftung nach draußen leiten.
  • Erhöhter Luftaustausch durch Öffnen von Fenstern.

The radon prevention area in the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtelgebirge is a prime example of regional cooperation in radon protection. Additional regulations apply here to protect the population and to draw attention to the importance of radon measurements. Regions in the Bavarian Alps, such as the Bavarian Forest or the Ore Mountains, are also known as key areas where radon should be dealt with more intensively.

In a collective commitment, the European Radon Day campaign highlights that radon protection is a task that affects everyone. As the radon superhero Radonia clearly explains in an explanatory video, every individual can contribute to safety in their own home by acting carefully.

Raising awareness of radon and its potential dangers is the first step towards a safe future. Get informed and take the necessary measures!
