Ceremonial premiere: Film Orchestra Babelsberg awakens young talents!

*] On May 4, 2025, a very special event will be celebrated in Potsdam: The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg (DFOB) goes on a musical journey through the world of film music as part of the event "Film Orchestra meets Film University". The DFOB, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and a quarter of a century since it was founded, has made a name for itself for its outstanding studio productions and concerts with film music. In 1993 the orchestra was reorganized and ties in with the tradition of the legendary UFA and DEFA symphony orchestras. Their [* history goes back to 1918 when the Universum Film AG (UFA) launched the UFA symphony orchestra.

[*] The festivities take place in the Nikolaisaal Potsdam, where from 7:30 p.m. young talents from the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf will present their films. These were backed up with film music composed by students. Under the direction of Christian Köhler, the DFOB will accompany the performances live. The event offers an exciting program that focuses on animated films and includes various genres such as science fiction and film noir as well as experimental workshop productions. Films such as "Release of the Raven", "Royal Affairs" and "The case of Dr. Rath (at)".

are shown, among other things

A look into the past of the DFOB

[*] The DFOB is not only known for its appearances in modern productions. In its long history, it has also musically accompanied unforgettable silent films such as "Metropolis" and "The Kabinett of Dr. Caligari". From 1932 the orchestra was redesigned to meet the challenges of the sound film. It participated in important film projects, including "The Blue Angel" and "The Feuerzangenbowle". In the work of the orchestra, an impressive piece of German film history is reflected that still flows into the work of the DFOB.

[*] The event "Film Orchestra Meets Filmuni" is part of the annual campaign "1000 years and a quarter of a century - 1025 years of Potsdam" and offers the opportunity to experience the connection of film and music in a pleasant way. Anna Luise Kiss, who will have talks with the filmmakers, will moderate. Tickets are available for € 12.00 (reduced € 6.00) and promise an evening full of creative inspiration and musical pleasure.

[*] The DFOB has covered a remarkable path since it was founded in 1993 and is now strongly represented both in the production of film and television music as well as in concert activity. From 1993 to 2007 it was based on the broadcasting site in Berliner Nalepastraße, where numerous soundtracks were created. In 2007 the orchestra returned to the Babelsberg film studios and experienced a comprehensive renovation of the former studio A, which is now the highest international standards.

*] Cooperation with emerging filmmakers and composers shows that the DFOB continues to play a central role in the German film and music landscape. The event on November 2 is not only a festival of the film, but also a tribute to the rich history of the DFOB, whose artistic heritage continues in every note.
