Berlin container villages for refugees: plans failed!
Berlin container villages for refugees: plans failed!
Berlin, Deutschland - The Berlin migration policy is again in the headlines, since three planned container villages for refugees are not realized. This affects the locations in Westend, Pankow and Lichtenberg. However, the ambitions of creating new accommodations fail due to the resistance of the Deutsche Bahn, which does not allow the necessary access via a company premises in Westend. This information comes from a response from the State Office for Refugee Affairs to inquiries from the .
Despite these setbacks, the Berlin Senate recently decided 16 new locations for container accommodations. This is to create more than 6,130 places for refugees. These accommodations are planned for the years 2025 and 2026 in nine districts. The smallest planned accommodation will offer 150 places, but the largest 620 places. The new container systems are to be created on fallow, parking spaces and areas that will later be attributed to other use. A maximum term by 2029 is intended for Tegel North, for example, before regular housing is carried out.
new locations and challenges
The new container locations were announced at a Senate meeting. The decisive locations are:
- Reinickendorf: Am Borsigturm (210 seats), Tegel Nord (500 places)
- Spandau: Askanierring (500 places)
- Pankow: Blankenburger Pflasterweg (500 places), Buchholzer Str./Rosenthaler Weg (500 places), Eldenaer Str. (400 places)
- Lichtenberg: Darßer Str. (2 locations, 770 places), Klützer Str. (510 places), Storkower Str. (310 places)

The refugee coordinator Albrecht Broemme also points out that the distribution of refugees in the city is currently perceived as unjust. In order to counteract this grievance, the rental of hotel places is also considered. In addition, the administration checks whether vacant private properties can serve as additional accommodation opportunities to meet the barriers in the urban area.
criticism of the implementation
However, the new plans are also encountered by the district mayor. In particular, the suitability of the locations and the social infrastructure available for this are questioned. The district mayor of Lichtenberg calls for a fair distribution of the refugees and also suggests expansion of capacities on Tempelhofer Feld. The Reinickendorf district expressed astonishment on the plans and speaks of an overload of the social infrastructure.
